Chronicles of the journey….

#1 – My Intro to Vlogging/RSS

Sample Vlog episode for a non profit:

Organization: Projectile Arts

Created: Feb ’06

Platform: Mac/FCP

The Back Story

In late 2004/early 2005, one of my many internships was for a company called Python/Aquarius productions. I went on a few shoots for them — two that I specifically remember were promo for and The Food Network. In the Spring of ’06, The co-founder of Python/Aquarius gave my info to a friend of a friend, who happened to run a small brooklyn-based non profit – Projectile Arts. He was seeking someone who, among other things, could produce a weekly vlog to be used as a promotional tool for the org’s various doc projects.

This particular vlog episode was created as promo for an affiliated organization, the Reality Art Class Teachers Collective. The RACTC is a group of New York City Public Teachers who meet weekly at Projectile Arts to explore ways of using art to foster a deeper understanding of all academic subjects.

I was with Projectile Arts from February to late April of ’06, I believe. We’ll call the reason for my parting “creative differences”. Nevertheless, it was a great experience and introduced me to the wonderful world of RSS.

Note: I did not shoot any of this vlog other than pick up shots. I edited it down from a lot of other footage. If I had shot it trust me, it would have been much better. Otherwise, I like it a lot.

Check out the Reality Art Class Teachers Collective as well. I wish my teachers had been like them growing up.

The Worst Reality Show Idea Ever & Twitterpated

“Take the appeal of the court genre and add the fascination of Celebrities
and you have the making of quality daytime television”

You know what would be more fun to watch?

1 – Paint Dry

2 – Me plucking my eyebrows

3 – Someone getting a colonostapy

I am embarking on a sociological experiment. I’ve started semi tracking my activities using Twitter. I am going to continue this for a while, and see how and to what degree I effect my own behavior by publicly logging it and then being forced to review it.

So far I have to say that that the whole thing feels really creepy. This past weekend I would find myself debating, what is “twitter worthy?” What is worth posting? I didn’t want to come off as a narcissistic douche. But then I noticed what others find worthy to document:

markng had a turkey bacon sage and onion pie for lunch, now I want to sleep !

And now I feel slightly better.

Nylon Mag’s online vids & Getting out of the office! WoOt!

Posted on March 1, 2007. Filed under: MTV News, My Projects, Nylon Magazine, Urban Latino Magazine |

I love Nylon Magazine!

I don’t know what I love more – the fact that I can get entire issues online for free in a cool flippity format or the fact that they now have an online video channel.

…Unfortunately, the quality of their videos is sadly, quite crappy. And it doesn’t matter how great your content is if people can barely stand watching it.

Here are some examples of magazines doing the online video thing a tad (ok, a lot) better for my already over used peepers:

National Geographic

But to be fair, I also found a magazine with an even worse offering of video – Seventeen. It looks like they haven’t updated their video extras area since 2005. How do I know this? Because I worked on the MTV reality show “Miss Seventeen” and that is the only content that is living there (as of today). Woops! I wonder how many teen girls even bother to visit the site in the first place. It seems pretty dead.

Heh heh. Yes, tis true. Bright and early I am accompanying producer Tami on a bilingual bands shoot. This will be my first experience on an MTV News shoot, being that I work for the digital side. It will be an interesting experience working on a project from both realms – the on air & the digital.

Stay tuned for many updates on this because A) I love bilingual bands, B) I pitched the show idea, and C) I plan on promoting the crap out of it. I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

My First Music Video – Pistolera – updates galore

Posted on February 26, 2007. Filed under: Music Video, My Projects, Pistolera |

Guess what?

My first music video (for Pistolera’s song “Cazador”) will debut tomorrow on METV in Austin, TX on the show “Sonido Boombox”. They have it posted on their show calendar:

The video will also be included in a DVD compilation about immigration marches around the country. The company is based in Vancouver, CA and is being spearheaded by Frank Lopez, formerly of Democracy Now! in NYC. It will be distributed to pro-immigrant groups in April around the country to get them amped about the marches that are to take place this May. I am really excited about this and hope it inspires lots of people. The video has also been sent to: LA TV, Mun2, MTV Espanol, World Beats, and Democracy Now!, and New York Noise.

Will keep you posted as I hear more info…

A Banner Friday

Posted on February 16, 2007. Filed under: Chan-wook Park, My Projects, Pistolera, The Lot |

I have been getting a lot of love already for the Pistolera Music Video, thank you! I was pleased to get my #2nd link back  (ooo) from the Music Video News blog. They posted same day! Word travels fast on this here internetz! I worked on the video for so long, and I am eager to see it on air and to not have to deal with anything related to it any more :).

However, if you cannot get enough of Pistolera – check out this live performance clip I submitted to AntCast a while back. It’s Cazador, only live, during the Pistolera CD release party for Siempre Hay Salida at Joe’s Pub in NYC, 11.10.06.

Life goes on! Tonight I am submitting my short film to The Lot. It is called “Lily’s Evening”. I shot/directed this last weekend and edited after work all week. This was a co-production with the very talented Jennifer Spears, who for whatever reason, in case it does get selected, doesn’t want to be on the show. … There are a few people at work who are also submitting.  … I haven’t looked into whether I’m not allowed to submit since it’s a show on Fox, and I work for Viacom, but whatever. We’ll see.

This weekend it is going down at the IFC Center! They are screening Chan-wook Park‘s Vengeance Trilogy – Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, OldBoy (the incest movie I raved about last week), Lady Vengeance AND a 4th surprise…. I have seen all three and I need a few days to decompress so I am not going, but if you haven’t experienced these amazing films you should check it out. I may show up for the 4th surprise though. Who knows.

Sneak Peek: Pistolera’s Music Video for Cazador

Posted on February 15, 2007. Filed under: Cazador, Music Video, My Projects, Pistolera, this is awesome |

Ladies, Gentlemen, and Kiddies –

After months of work, my first music video is finally complete. I planned/directed/shot this all on my own, and edited it on FCP with the wonderful assistance of Ignacio Guzman, who I will link back to as soon as I talk to him and find out what me wants me to link to. I was to excited to wait. This video is (tentatively, don’t quote me just yet) going to air on several music video channels/programs including NY Noise, METV, World Beat Canada (Channel M), and MTV Espanol. I will post a final, confirmed list later next week. These are just the channels that I was told would air it, but we’ll have to wait and see if that actually happens.

Here is a TEMPORARY LINK to the final cut – watch it now because soon it will be gone, heh heh. The next time you’ll be able to see it will probably be on the Pistolera website or their myspace page. … There’s lots of bar/tone in the beginning so be patient.

A little back story: I shot the band performing at a Brooklyn spot called Barbes. I also shot all the immigration rights march footage in April of 2006, without knowing what I would end up doing with it. Some of it may have ended up on BET, I had a friend who was a production coordinator there and I gave her some footage for them to use, but otherwise the only other place it has lived has been on my myspace page. I went to the march with my roommate/good friend Christina Morales, who you can see in the video (“Educated Chicano” bag). I was so fired up during that experience, so much so that I didn’t realize my arm was all jacked up til after the fact – I had been holding that camera up for about four hours straight. The next day I could barely move it.

The production of this music video was a definite learning experience in planning, finding/managing resources, and scheduling. I will write a more comprehensive entry on this experience at a later date.

I hope you enjoy it! 😉 All comments appreciated.

Frozen Toes and Works in Progress

Posted on February 9, 2007. Filed under: film resources, Grammys, MTV News, My Projects, Pistolera, work |

Another edition to my slowly growing list of film resources…

Not Coming to a Theater Near You assumes a bias towards older, often unpopular, and sometimes unknown films that merit a second look.

So there is a lot of “news” happening right now related to death that many media entities are reporting on, including MTV News, and it’s made me aware of a disturbing trend that I have seen among bloggers… Writing a post specifically on something sensationalistic/what everyone is probably googling right at that moment, for the sole purpose of showing up in results.

I’m making a personal choice not to do that. ..Just because I know it might mean I will get more hits/subscribers, doesn’t mean I am going to take advantage. I mention my work and tag it as such when it’s relevant, however the point behind this blog was to create a public face and to share current & future creative endeavors with the world. I will have to pick and choose what I think is appropriate to mention here about my work life, and to be honest I am a little tired of hearing and working on assignments related to death.

I would rather finish up this week on a good note.  A real one, that actually applies to my life – Tonight I am going to a dinner for someone’s birthday. There will be a lot of people there who I have never met before, which should be fun because due to this awful weather I haven’t gone anywhere in a long time. I wore an incredibly cute skirt today with heels and within the first few minutes of being outside, my toes lost all sensation. Luckily I brought black low top converse, which go with everything.

I am going to live it up tonight, and Saturday I am spending all day shooting a short film. I am excited about this because the finished product will be my first short film that I will make available on the web, so stay tuned.

…The Pistolera music video for “Cazador” is almost done! I will premiere it here next week for the whole world to see, before it starts showing up on video channels that I will name on a later date. This was my first time directing/producing/shooting a music video so obviously, I am psyched.
