Oh, how time flies! Just a year ago I directed Pistolera‘s first music video and since then they have been all over the place. It’s been great fun to watch one of my favorite bands progress.
They’ve done a European and Mexico tour, were featured in Rolling Stone Mexico, Sandra had a baby, etc. – so much has happened!
Pistolera is shooting their second music video on Sunday December 9th for the new song “Policia” and they need 25-30 people for their performance scene.
“Policia” is a new song that tells the tale of when singer Sandra Velásquez was arrested at the airport for her guitar strap which was decorated with empty bullet casings. The song will be on Pistolera’s next album due out in the spring. This video will be the first to support the album.
The video will be shot in DUMBO, Brooklyn at their rehearsal space. I would offer to be an extra but I am already working that weekend. But you should do it – sounds like fun!
First 30 people to reply are in (email pistoleramusicATgmail.com) You must have Dec 9 avail.
Their last video, “Cazador,” aired on stations nationwide as well as 2 documentaries and included my footage from the Spring ’06 immigration rights marches in NYC.
Here’s a somewhat grainy but still entertaining ^_^ youtube version of their first video:
~ Currently in the Lair pipeline is a feature on Pistolera for the June/July issue of Urban Latino Magazine. I hope you will check it out and let me know what you think.
Pistolera just finished wrapping up their spring Belgium/Holland tour, and a few days ago finally returned to the states after performing for thousands of people at the Ollin Kan Festival in Mexico City.
!!! Check them out for free at the upcoming Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival on July 5th !!!
Here is an excerpt from their Belgium/Holland tour diary:
“Our only gig in Brussels! A cool space called DeKriekelaar. It was the best show of the tour! Totally packed, and there were even latinos there that cheered for the lyrics. We did a great merch and Eileen had a stalker…”
After the jump, a clip from that very show and a handy 2.0 tip for bands seeking quick/accurate blog coverage:Read Full Post | Make a Comment ( 1 so far )
The music video I shot/directed for them, Cazador, will also be featured in an upcoming art exhibit:

* I am going to be applying my development/marketing skillage to the upcoming NewFest: The 19th New York LGBT Film Festival.
Over the past few years, I have done volunteer promo/marketing work for the Tribeca Film Festival and Brooklyn Underground Film festival. There are a lot of great changes already in store for NewFest, so it will be good times participating in their growth.Read Full Post | Make a Comment ( None so far )
The Giant Awakens is a DVD compilation of compelling short films from all around the country, due to hit the streets in the weeks before Mayday 2007. Shot, edited, and brought together by a network of independent video activists, graphic designers, community organizers, musicians, and immigrant rights activists, it is a collective memory and a tool to inspire action this MayDay 2007, when the Giant will raise its voice again to say: we are one people, without borders. (from website)
My video for Pistolera’s song “Cazador” will be included on this DVD and I am looking forward to checking out the other contributions.

My first music video (for Pistolera’s song “Cazador”) will debut tomorrow on METV in Austin, TX on the show “Sonido Boombox”. They have it posted on their show calendar: www.myspace.com/sonidoboombox
The video will also be included in a DVD compilation about immigration marches around the country. The company is based in Vancouver, CA and is being spearheaded by Frank Lopez, formerly of Democracy Now! in NYC. It will be distributed to pro-immigrant groups in April around the country to get them amped about the marches that are to take place this May. I am really excited about this and hope it inspires lots of people. The video has also been sent to: LA TV, Mun2, MTV Espanol, World Beats, and Democracy Now!, and New York Noise.
Will keep you posted as I hear more info…

I have been getting a lot of love already for the Pistolera Music Video, thank you! I was pleased to get my #2nd link back (ooo) from the Music Video News blog. They posted same day! Word travels fast on this here internetz! I worked on the video for so long, and I am eager to see it on air and to not have to deal with anything related to it any more .
However, if you cannot get enough of Pistolera – check out this live performance clip I submitted to AntCast a while back. It’s Cazador, only live, during the Pistolera CD release party for Siempre Hay Salida at Joe’s Pub in NYC, 11.10.06.
Life goes on! Tonight I am submitting my short film to The Lot. It is called “Lily’s Evening”. I shot/directed this last weekend and edited after work all week. This was a co-production with the very talented Jennifer Spears, who for whatever reason, in case it does get selected, doesn’t want to be on the show. … There are a few people at work who are also submitting. … I haven’t looked into whether I’m not allowed to submit since it’s a show on Fox, and I work for Viacom, but whatever. We’ll see.
This weekend it is going down at the IFC Center! They are screening Chan-wook Park‘s Vengeance Trilogy – Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, OldBoy (the incest movie I raved about last week), Lady Vengeance AND a 4th surprise…. I have seen all three and I need a few days to decompress so I am not going, but if you haven’t experienced these amazing films you should check it out. I may show up for the 4th surprise though. Who knows.Read Full Post | Make a Comment ( None so far )
Ladies, Gentlemen, and Kiddies -
After months of work, my first music video is finally complete. I planned/directed/shot this all on my own, and edited it on FCP with the wonderful assistance of Ignacio Guzman, who I will link back to as soon as I talk to him and find out what me wants me to link to. I was to excited to wait. This video is (tentatively, don’t quote me just yet) going to air on several music video channels/programs including NY Noise, METV, World Beat Canada (Channel M), and MTV Espanol. I will post a final, confirmed list later next week. These are just the channels that I was told would air it, but we’ll have to wait and see if that actually happens.
Here is a TEMPORARY LINK to the final cut - watch it now because soon it will be gone, heh heh. The next time you’ll be able to see it will probably be on the Pistolera website or their myspace page. … There’s lots of bar/tone in the beginning so be patient.
A little back story: I shot the band performing at a Brooklyn spot called Barbes. I also shot all the immigration rights march footage in April of 2006, without knowing what I would end up doing with it. Some of it may have ended up on BET, I had a friend who was a production coordinator there and I gave her some footage for them to use, but otherwise the only other place it has lived has been on my myspace page. I went to the march with my roommate/good friend Christina Morales, who you can see in the video (“Educated Chicano” bag). I was so fired up during that experience, so much so that I didn’t realize my arm was all jacked up til after the fact – I had been holding that camera up for about four hours straight. The next day I could barely move it.
The production of this music video was a definite learning experience in planning, finding/managing resources, and scheduling. I will write a more comprehensive entry on this experience at a later date.
I hope you enjoy it! All comments appreciated.

Another edition to my slowly growing list of film resources…
Not Coming to a Theater Near You assumes a bias towards older, often unpopular, and sometimes unknown films that merit a second look.
So there is a lot of “news” happening right now related to death that many media entities are reporting on, including MTV News, and it’s made me aware of a disturbing trend that I have seen among bloggers… Writing a post specifically on something sensationalistic/what everyone is probably googling right at that moment, for the sole purpose of showing up in results.
I’m making a personal choice not to do that. ..Just because I know it might mean I will get more hits/subscribers, doesn’t mean I am going to take advantage. I mention my work and tag it as such when it’s relevant, however the point behind this blog was to create a public face and to share current & future creative endeavors with the world. I will have to pick and choose what I think is appropriate to mention here about my work life, and to be honest I am a little tired of hearing and working on assignments related to death.
I would rather finish up this week on a good note. A real one, that actually applies to my life – Tonight I am going to a dinner for someone’s birthday. There will be a lot of people there who I have never met before, which should be fun because due to this awful weather I haven’t gone anywhere in a long time. I wore an incredibly cute skirt today with heels and within the first few minutes of being outside, my toes lost all sensation. Luckily I brought black low top converse, which go with everything.
I am going to live it up tonight, and Saturday I am spending all day shooting a short film. I am excited about this because the finished product will be my first short film that I will make available on the web, so stay tuned.
…The Pistolera music video for “Cazador” is almost done! I will premiere it here next week for the whole world to see, before it starts showing up on video channels that I will name on a later date. This was my first time directing/producing/shooting a music video so obviously, I am psyched.Read Full Post | Make a Comment ( None so far )
For the first time since, well ever, I went to work before 10am and was welcomed with the overwhelming smell of gas on 42nd & Broadway. Apparently the entire west side will be stinky for quite some time…
I saw the olfactory sensation Perfume this weekend with friends… I don’t want to ruin it for anyone who plans on seeing this, so let’s say I was traumatized by something that sounds like porgie. There was a porgie in this movie that caused me to lose my sight and sense of reason for a good five minutes. The audience was at first speechless, but soon bursts of teehees and guffaws were popping up all throughout the theater… I still really enjoyed seeing Perfume and even though this will make me sound like some kind of sniffing pervert, I could relate to lead character. I love the way things smell (good and bad) and am often comforted by the lingering scents that loved ones leave behind.
… The whole point behind starting this blog fyi is to share my video creations and interesting finds I stumble upon. Right now I don’t have any video to share (comp is on the fritz), but will soon, so be patient and bare with me as I orientate myself in this new foray of creative expression and shameless self promotion.
However! Stay tuned for the world premiere (ooo) of the Pistolera music video “Cazador”, that I have been working on for the last few months. I will finish editing it this week and will share it with you (and the world) here as soon as I can, along with a lengthy blog entry on my experience directing/shooting/editing my first music video.
Until then, wet your whistle on this very shaky clip I shot a month ago at their CD release party (the waitresses kept shoving me out of there way):Read Full Post | Make a Comment ( None so far )
